Details on Magento Project Stratus
Magento has just publicly announced Project Stratus, a cloud hosting offering that will be available in Qq 2011. They don't have many details available, except for a couple basic FAQs and a beta signup page at: http://stratus.magentocommerce.com.
Here is what we do and don't know...
One of the big advantages that it looks like Stratus will have over other SAAS options is the ability to extend it. We will update this post as more features become known, but here is what we do know:
- This will be owned and maintained by Magento so we expect high performance. If anyone knows how to tweak a server for Magento, Magento does.
- The FAQ says "Stratus creates more choice for merchants to select the product and platform that best fits their needs". This makes me wonder if they will offer plans that mirror Community, Professional and Enterprise features. Or maybe the only difference will be the number of SKUs you can have.
- It will be PCI Compliant. This will make it much easier for small merchants to achieve the level of compliance that is required by their merchants.
- This could spell trouble for a lot of Magento hosting companies.
- The service will (most likely) be available at http://www.cloudstores.com. It is currently a Magento error message with Magento favicon.
...and here are the details we don't have:
- More detailed features. Anything new?
- Pricing
Anybody have any extra details? Let us know in the comments!

Yes, sounds like trouble for hosting companies.

Doesn’t look like a threat yet and won’t until they allow the same level of customisation as on your own installation, including extensions.
I’d say Amazon and Linode are a bigger threat.
Take this (http://www.zetaprints.com/magentohelp/free-magento-ami-on-aws/) and add free tier hosting offered by Amazon (http://aws.amazon.com/free/) and you get a free mage site that runs out of the box.
Hopefully Magento will get their own hosting appealing enough. Mucking around with your own instance is not everyone’s cup of tea.
